I love my wife

The other day my wife, Bari, mentions that she wanted a milk shake...well not just a milk shake but a stracciatella (chocolate chip gelato) one. So I made it last night.

With an ice cream maker, it is quite easy.

1 1/2 cup cream
1 1/2 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean
2 oz. chocolate, finely chopped

Mix the cream, milk and sugar in a pan and cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is disolved.
Add the vanilla bean, scraping the seeds into the pan.
Let stand about 30 minutes, then refrigerate at until completely cool, about 2 hours.

Pour mixture into ice cream machine.

Add the chocolate. Notice that I use a scale, this is an essential tool for the kitchen.

Mix (well actually push the "on" button and watch it mix) until the gelato is done.

At this point it is still quite soft. If you plan to eat as gelato, I recommend putting in the freezer to set for a couple of hours. For a milk shake, blend with a touch of milk until smooth. Enjoy.
